Terror Suspect Arrested in Nairobi Carrying 21 Detonators

On Tuesday, June 17, police officers from Kamukunji Police Station made an arrest in Nairobi for a suspected terrorist. The National Police Service (NPS) stated in a statement that officers who were on patrol made the arrest of the suspect around 11:20 PM. NPS noted that the suspect’s erratic behavior attracted the attention of the police officers, prompting them to question him.

“A man on suspicion of potential involvement in activities related to terrorism was identified and arrested by police officers on patrol at approximately 23:20 yesterday. According to a portion of the statement, "His evasive and erratic behavior drew the attention of alert officers from Kamukunji Police Station, prompting them to question him and inspect the contents of a bag in his possession."

The officers searched the suspect and found him in possession of 21 detonators, 21 packets of a white substance, and a five-meter-long electric cable.

The National Park Service (NPS) added, "Upon a further search, the 22-year-old suspect was found to be carrying 21 detonators, along with 21 packets of a white substance suspected to be ammonium nitrate, a five-metre-long electric cable, and other items." The suspect was immediately detained and later handed over to the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU) for further interrogation as investigations proceed.

Days after two suspected Al-Shabaab militants were killed in a security operation along the Alungu-Elwak road in Mandera County, the suspected terrorists were arrested. After receiving credible information that the militants were nearing the end of their process of putting explosives on the busy road, the elite Special Operations Group launched a dawn raid. During the operation, officers recovered two AK-47 rifles, a Rocket-Propelled Grenade (RPG) warhead, and a fully assembled IED.
