Woman in Umoja arrested after injuring neighbour with hot githeri soup in heated argument

A woman from Umoja Estate faces assault charges after allegedly burning her business neighbour with boiling soup during a dispute over drainage pollution.

Rachael Wambui is accused of causing actual bodily harm to her immediate neighbour, Winfred Nduki Mutual, by scalding her with hot githeri soup on April 25.

The two women, who run adjacent businesses, have had an ongoing strained relationship, largely due to Wambui repeatedly spilling bean soup into the drainage system.

This caused the area to become filthy and attracted swarms of flies, negatively impacting Winfred’s business.

Despite several polite requests from Winfred for Wambui to stop contaminating the drainage, the problem continued unresolved.

On the day of the incident, Wambui overheard Winfred telling her husband that the soup spillage was making her business unbearable.

Although Winfred’s husband suggested the two women address their differences amicably, Wambui allegedly reacted violently.

According to witnesses, Wambui then scooped a pot of boiling githeri soup and threw it onto Winfred’s head, burning her scalp.

Passersby who heard the victim’s screams quickly intervened, helping her and advising her to seek immediate medical attention before reporting the incident to the authorities.

Wambui has denied the allegations. She was released on a cash bail of Sh20,000 or an alternative bond of Sh50,000.

The matter is scheduled for hearing at the Makadara Law Courts on November 3.
