LOS ANGELES -
A surprising online clash between Nicki Minaj and SZA unfolded this week, catching fans off guard as the two chart-topping artists exchanged sharp words on X (formerly Twitter).
The spat began on Tuesday, when SZA, real name Solána Rowe, posted a seemingly light-hearted message:
“Mercury retrograde .. don’t take the bait lol silly goose.”
But the timing of the post as Minaj was airing grievances against Roc Nation and its CEO, Desiree Perez raised eyebrows.
Minaj, interpreting the tweet as a veiled jab, unleashed a blistering reply. In one post, she mocked SZA’s vocals, likening them to a“dead dog”and telling her to“go draw your freckles back on bookie.”
Minaj also used the hashtags#JusticeForDemoreeand#DepositionPerezreferences to claims made by Demoree Hadley, who alleges she was abused by her mother, Desiree Perez. The rapper has been vocally supporting Demoree online in recent weeks.
SZA quickly clapped back.
“I don’t give a f**k bout none of that weird shit you popping,”she wrote, adding that her earlier post had nothing to do with Minaj.
Her team clarified that she had just wrapped up a concert in Paris part of the “GNX” tour with Kendrick Lamar when she tweeted. According to them, the message was entirely unrelated to Minaj’s ongoing dispute with Roc Nation.
To further complicate matters, SZA’s manager, Terrence “Punch” Henderson, had also posted about “Black Barbies” a name that some fans associate with Minaj. But the reference was actually about a new song by Lyric Michelle, a member of Henderson’s music collectiveRoom Full of Mirrors.
So far, Minaj has not responded to SZA’s explanation. She appears to remain focused on the larger issue at hand her support for Demoree and criticism of Perez, whom she has accused of wrongdoing within Roc Nation.
The drama has sparked confusion among fans, many of whom are unsure how a simple tweet about astrology spiralled into a full-blown public feud.
While some fans have rushed to defend their favourite artist, others are urging both women to take a step back.
“This is sad to watch,” wrote one user. “They’re both so talented. I wish we didn’t have to see this unfold in real time.”
As of Wednesday morning, neither artist had deleted their posts. The online tension remains unresolved.
Nicki Minaj has recently turned her attention toward Roc Nation, airing allegations against its leadership and defending those she claims were mistreated by the organisation. Desiree Perez, a longtime executive at the agency, has not publicly addressed the claims.
SZA, on the other hand, has been on a high note professionally, selling out arenas across Europe and receiving praise for her live performances. Her social media activity has often leaned introspective and playful, leaving fans puzzled by the sudden fallout.
While public spats are nothing new in the music industry, the clash between Minaj and SZA touches on deeper issues from artist loyalty and interpretation of online messages to unresolved tensions within entertainment power circles.
