A huge python seen slithering across a road in what is said to be Karura Forest.
Kenya Forest Service (KFS) has come out to address concerns after a video of what appeared to be a giant black python slithering across a path in
went viral on social media this week.
The footage, widely circulated online, shows the snake moving along a murram pathway before disappearing into the undergrowth.
The agency clarified on Thursday evening that while pythons have been sighted in Karura in previous years, including 2019 and 2022, the current report remains unverified.
“Kenya Forest Service notes that although pythons have been sighted within Karura in the past years, namely in 2019 and 2022, the current sighting and the photo in circulation is yet to be authenticated,” the statement read.
As a precaution, KFS urged visitors to exercise vigilance when inside the forest. People are advised to stick strictly to jogging and walking paths, and to keep pets on a leash at all times.
Any sighting should be reported immediately to KFS Forest Rangers stationed at the various gates.
“Kenya Forest Service will collaborate with relevant government agencies to explore potential solutions to this matter and will advise the public accordingly,” the statement added, reassuring the public that measures are underway to manage possible wildlife encounters.
Karura Forest is one of Nairobi’s most iconic green spaces. It is known for its cycling and jogging trails, caves, waterfalls, and rich biodiversity, attracting thousands of local and international visitors monthly.
The forest continues to serve as a symbol of urban conservation, offering residents a serene escape just minutes from the city centre.
Visitors are encouraged to remain alert, enjoy the forest responsibly, and report any unusual wildlife sightings. KFS continues to monitor the situation and will update the public as new information becomes available.
